     My dad, not wanting to hear the facts, put his hand on her arm and questioned her, “Honey, it didn’t happen, did it?” She nodded that it had indeed happened. As my father looked at her with disbelief, she said to me, “Why, oh why, didn’t you tell me years ago?”

 What Fear Does

     Fear chokes the soul just as weeds choke the most beautiful flowers in the garden. Now, as this fear was beginning to be released, perhaps the garden of my life could start blooming just as it had been created to do by my Creator.

 “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives [casts] out fear, because fear has to do with punishment [involves torment]. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

1 John 4:18

 “But I will rescue you on that day, declares the Lord; you will not be handed over to those you fear.”

Jeremiah 39:17

“But now, this is what the Lord says—he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned [called] you by [your] name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze [scorch you].”

 Post Script

     Although the word picture is not original with me, I see fear as the wrapping paper around the gifts from God that are inside you. You must go through the fear, embrace it, and then discard it to discover what is inside. When fear comes uninvited, it needs to become an offering to God and to yourself to work through that fear in order to free your soul to live.

     Do you flee . . . or can you cast aside the wrapping and unwrap the gift?
