Meet the Authors

Dave Maynard began his career in 1952. He became the resident chef of WBZ, the originator of "The Phantom Gourmet" radio program and author of three cookbooks. On television, he was host of Community Auditions, the forerunner of "Star Search." His name still appears in the credits for that show.

In 1979, he began on the night shift from 12 a.m. to 5 a.m. One of Dave's most memorable moments was when he kept a suicidal caller on the air for about an hour, tracking his location and saving his life. On December 1, 1983, the Mayor of Boston, Kevin White, proclaimed "Dave Maynard Day" to celebrate Dave's 25 years at WBZ.

During his career, he was involved in events raising funds for many non-profits such as The Boston Children's Hospital, Eye Research, Muscular Dystrophy, The Salvation Army, United Cerebral Palsy, The Arthritis Foundation, and The March of Dimes. He is the recipient of numerous Awards and was inducted into the New England/MA Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2009.

He was a graduate of Emerson College, Boston, MA, and earned a Master's degree from Boston University. He resided in Florida.

Suzan Franks has been involved in community activities for many years, serving in elective offices as a member of the Board of Education, Board of Aldermen and the NH Legislature. She worked in many fundraising endeavors for over 20 years, most of which were of benefit to students, the young and the elderly.

She resides with her husband in Florida.
